Visit of UNEB Geography Students Pedagogical Excursion (Santo Antônio de Jesus/Bahia)
United Towards Understanding Traditional Communities
On the field trip "The Bay of All Saints, its landscapes and traditional communities", held on October 5th and 6th, 2022, we students from the III and V semesters of the Geography degree course at UNEB had the opportunity to visit Matarandiba, a community of a thousand inhabitants in the municipality of Vera Cruz, on the largest island in BTS. The community's economy is based on artisanal fishing and the extraction of resources from its mangrove areas. The Community Association of Matarandiba - ASCOMA, assisted by UFBA, has developed a network of solidarity enterprises for sustainable development, such as community-based tourism and the community bank, whose own currency, the shell, circulates in the community through loans, payments (grants for projects), purchases in commercial establishments, and/or by simply exchanging real currency at the bank. We, from the geography course at UNEB in Santo Antônio de Jesus, are very grateful for the warm reception and rich learning experience provided by the community leaders: Evaldo and Ana Carla from Vivetur, Elizângela from ASCOMA, Flávia from the community bank, Maria Clara and Ueliton from the Infocenter and community radio, and Meire from the restaurant, as well as the entire community (Team representing the Geography course: Gildete de Jesus Santos, Lucas Pereira, Valdirene de Jesus Oliveira, Maria Magnolia de Jesus Santos, Joelma Conceição dos Santo, Telma M. de Jesus Santos, and Prof. Rocío Castro Kustner).
