The region of Porto, in Praça Mauá, which underwent recent urbanization for the 2016 Olympics and now houses the Museum of Tomorrow and the MAR - Museum of Art of Rio. Our walk begins in front of the MAR Museum where we discuss the gentrification processes of the region, reading the landscape as a historical and social construction. We then head to Largo São Francisco da Prainha, discussing the complex system of the region's slave market, the cycles of sugar cane, coffee, and gold, and we will bring the story of classical dancer Mercedes Baptista.
