Description

The region of Porto, in Praça Mauá, which underwent recent urbanization for the 2016 Olympics and now houses the Museum of Tomorrow and the MAR - Museum of Art of Rio. Our walk begins in front of the MAR Museum where we discuss the gentrification processes of the region, reading the landscape as a historical and social construction. We then head to Largo São Francisco da Prainha, discussing the complex system of the region's slave market, the cycles of sugar cane, coffee, and gold, and we will bring the story of classical dancer Mercedes Baptista.

Who does it

Rio Encantos

I am a lover of art, nature, and popular culture. An adventurer, always seeking to learn and in broad connection with the diversity of traditions. As a tour guide, I invite everyone to experience the unusual, savor life, live music, the aromas of coffee, cachaça, homemade snacks, and fresh air. I invite everyone to understand ancestry through the marks left in the present, material and immaterial, within us in our culture. I live each moment with enthusiasm and invite you to reverence with me the passion for life and the sophistication of the simplicity of things. In 2013, I created Rio EnCantos Experiences, a Rio de Janeiro agency for tourist reception, which has been building glocal network connections between travelers and agents passionate about the charms of Brazil. Through tourism, I have been working to attribute our cultural capital to its founders historically disadvantaged by colonialism, valuing the narratives, protagonisms, and knowledge originating from our African and indigenous heritage. Our mission is to ensure that clients, partners, and travelers have the best experiences in a responsible and sustainable way.
